UPDATE: 4 Victims Identified in Small Plane Crash in Oconee County

IMG_0761The FAA and the NTSB are investigating  the plane crash Friday in Oconee County that killed four people.

It happened Friday about 4p when the plane crashed near U.S.123 on Lake Hartwell in Oconee County, SC near the Georgia State line.

Authorities say the plane, a 1984 single engine Piper Saratoga, left Warsaw, Indiana at approximately midday Friday and was scheduled to land at the Oconee County Airport later Friday afternoon.

Four adults on board were traveling to Clemson to attend the Clemson – Notre Dame Football game on Saturday.

Adam Williams, Deputy Chief, Oconee County Emergency Services tells WLHR News said all four on board, the pilot and three passengers were killed.

Williams said Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis worked through the night Friday to identify the four victims. IMG_0766

Saturday morning, Addis said the victims included the pilot, 71-year old Charles D. Smith and passengers 44-year old Scott A. Smith, 54-year old Tony L. Elliott and 51-year old Scott D. Bibler all of Warsaw, IN.

According to InkFreeNews.com, Charles Smith was seeking re-election to the Kosciousko common council.

As a member of the city’s common council, he represented the council on the Warsaw Aviation Board, on the Warsaw Board of Public Works and served on the Warsaw Redevelopment Commission.

“Coach” as he was known to many, was a coach and teacher for 16 years.

His son Scott was a local attorney in Warsaw County, IN and served as the deputy prosecuting attorney in St. Joseph, Allen and Kosciusko counties.

InkFreeNews.com reports Scott Bibler had spent the last 25 years making a difference in the lives of young people as a football coach and educator at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

He hoped to continue that impact by trading in his coaching whistle for a new career.

Bibler resigned as the Valley football coach and accepted a job with CrosssWinds, an in-home family counseling company based out of Fort Wayne. He remained in the area to work with organizations such as schools and youth groups in Kosciusko, St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall counties as the Director of Business Development for the company.

Tony Elliott, Warsaw, was owner of Elliott’s Custom Trailers, Warsaw, according to FreeInkNews.com.  He had raced all over the world. In his racing career, Elliott entered 236 races posting 27 wins during his career, between 1982 and 2012 according to DriverDatabase.

All of the families have been notified. Addis said autopsies are being conducted.

According to reports, multiple pieces of debris have been found in the Currahee Point area. Williams said the crash site is in a remote area of the lake and must be accessed by boat.
