Back to School Sales Tax Holiday This Weekend in GA and SC

Parents trying to get their children ready for the new school year will be taking advantage of
Georgia’s tax free holiday this weekend.

The tax free holiday starts today and runs through Saturday.

Governor Nathan Deal signed HB958 into law in April, which allows for two tax free weekends.  This weekend’s tax free holiday is expected to save Georgians up to $143 million dollars.

The Energy Efficient Household Appliance tax holiday, takes place this year on Oct. 3-5 and is expected to save taxpayers $2.6 million.

This weekend, most clothing that costs less than $100 is sales tax free this weekend. Also personal computers and accessories under $1,000, and school supplies under $20.00.

Retailers are expecting shoppers to jam their stores this weekend and that’s one reason why Teri Pope with the Georgia Department of Transportation says construction in those areas will be suspended this weekend.

“The suspension of lane closures near shopping districts is usually saved for Black Friday, but this weekend is the sales tax holiday and we are expecting huge volumes of traffic in and around retail areas,” Pope said. “So it is safer for our crews and for motorists if we suspend all work through the sales tax holiday.”

Pope said construction will be suspended in areas within five miles of any major retail outlet, particularly in the metro Atlanta area.

Work will be suspended beginning today through 10p Saturday evening to make roads safer for motorists trying to get to the stores for those deals.

Pope said motorists should still exercise caution as heavy traffic is expected throughout the North Georgia area and the state.

Meantime, in South Carolina the tax free holiday is this weekend as well.  South Carolina’s tax free weekend begins today and runs through midnight Sunday.  Like Georgia, all clothing, school supplies, computers and computer accessories are exempt from South Carolina sales tax this weekend.
