Donations Still Accepted for Back to School Bash Saturday

Just a reminder Royston’s annual Back to School Bash is coming up this weekend and donations are still being accepted.

Sponsored by the Royston Housing Authority with help from Oasis Community Outreach, and the Royston Police Department, the annual event helps under-priviledged children with school supplies and clothing for the upcoming school year.

This year’s Back to School Bash takes place August 2nd at the Royston Train Depot from 8:30a to 11a.

Royston Police Chief Donnie Boleman said Monday while donations have been coming in, they are still shy of the goal for this year.

“We’re still looking for some partnerships and for some people to reach out, some churches,” Boleman said. “We have approximately half of what we need at this point.  We are kind of scrambling. We know this time of year things are tight because of vacations, etc.”

Boleman said the Housing Authority has applied for some small grants as well to help pay for the supplies. He said some of the businesses who donated last year are not doing so again this year.

“We have applied some small grants and partnerships,” he said. “Some businesses have not been able to help us this time like they did last year.  But we’re hoping we will still be able to get the number of book bags we need like we did last year.”

Boleman said they hope to collect 800 bookbags and provide over 600 boxes of food for families.

“There will also be clothes there for people to go through and get out what they need,”  Boleman said. “We’re going to have several different booths there to provide people with information on different kinds of community services.”

In addition, Boleman said there will also be  free health screenings and free haircuts.

Anyone interested in donating either clothes, school supplies or money can contact Ashley Wellborn at the Royston Housing Authority.
