Elbert County’s Takeover of Bobby Brown Pushed Back Yet Again

by David Stephens, WSGC, Eleberton

Originally set to take over Bobby Brown Park in early March, the Elbert County Board of Commissioners still has yet to receive the green light to take over maintenance activities at Bobby Brown.

Several delays and takeover date push backs have impacted the county being able to get in and begin running the park.

Elbert County Administrator Bob Thomas explains the latest hang-up in the transition.

“The latest word that we have from the state is that it will probably be July 1st. The DNR Board did approve it for transfer and for the Elbert County to maintain it, but it had to go to the Properties Commission, which deals with all of Georgia’s real estate properties, and that board does not meet until June 10th”, explained Thomas.

Thomas said with that in mind, he is expecting a new takeover date of July 1st, and explains why.

“Since the fiscal year for the state and us starts July 1 I would just assume that we are probably not going to be able to take over maintenance of it until then. That is where we stand right now, unfortunately it has been pushed back several months, but that is just the way it is I guess”, said Thomas.

However, when Elbert County is finally able to take over Bobby Brown, Thomas expects a smooth transition, say for one particular part of the park, the office building.

“Because the state is not using that office, they closed it down, and it has been closed for 4 or 5 years”, said Thomas. “We wanted to get in there and clean it up and run the telephone and internet lines in there, but they won’t even let us do that. We are going to be scrambling, probably that first two to three weeks, because we can’t make reservations online until we get that internet up and running.”

Prior to the recent update, the county had expected to take over the park at the beginning of this month, and Thomas said it is unfortunate the county will be unable to collect revenue with the upcoming Memorial Day weekend right around the corner.

However, Thomas said if the county is able to take over the park on July 1st, then they would look forward to a busy Fourth of July weekend.
