Fire Destroys Mobile Home in Holcomb Access Community

Bonneville Rd trailerA Martin family is looking for a new home after fire destroyed their single wide mobile home.

It happened Monday morning about 8:30a on Bonneville Road in the Holcomb Access community.

Volunteer firefighters from Big Smith, Martin and Eastanollee fire stations responded to blaze.

“As of right now, we don’t know how the fire got started,” said Big Smith Fire Chief Jonathan Jordan. “When we got here we found the single wide fully involved and a camper about 50% involved, but we don’t know the cause of the fire at this time.”  Bonneville Rd Trailer2

One of the residents of the home, Larry Dale Bowen, Jr., said four people were in the house when the blaze broke out, including a 14-month old baby and a 14-year old teen.

“I was outside cleaning out the truck and everybody else was in the house,” he said. “They came out and said, ‘Dale, the house is on fire.’  I ran in to try to put it out, but the fire was too hot. I couldn’t save the house. I couldn’t save the camper. I couldn’t save nothin’.”

All four people inside the trailer got out safely, Bowen said.

Bowen suffered minor burns on his face when he ran into the trailer to try and put the fire out, but is otherwise going to be OK.   Bowen’s pull-behind camper, which was parked next to the single wide was also gutted by the flames.

“I always thought I’d have that to live in if something like this happened, but now even that’s gone,” he said.

Bowen said the family was renting the trailer and they now have no place to go.  They did not have renter’s insurance. Firefighters said they would be working with the Red Cross to help the family relocate.

Meantime, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
