Five people from Lavonia face multiple charges of drug dealing.
Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the arrests came Wednesday night as the result of an undercover investigation into drug trafficking in the Springview Heights area of town.
“We actually had one officer that observed a hand-to-hand transaction,” Carlisle said. “One person in one vehicle passed money to a person in another vehicle, and then crack cocaine was passed back to the first vehicle. After that transaction, a traffic stop was made on one Russell King.”
Carlisle said King allegedly purchased crack cocaine, which officers found inside his vehicle.
King was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
From that arrest, officers went to a home at 144 3rd Street in Lavonia where the transaction allegedly took place.
“Subsequent to (King) his arrest, officers went to the residence where they witnessed the illegal narcotics transaction and encountered one James Williams and Shane Travarious Moore and one female, Brittany Butler,” Carlisle said.
Carlisle said Moore is charged with the sale of cocaine, possession of marijuana and obstruction of officers.
James Williams was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, obstruction of law enforecement officers.
Also, Jennifer Jester, who also lives at the 3rd St. address, is charged with possession of marijuana and Butler was charged with obstruction of a police officer.
All were taken to the Franklin County Detention Center and await a bond hearing.
