Four UGA Students Killed, 1 Critically Injured in Wednesday Night Wreck

Four female University of Georgia students have been killed and another student critically injured in a car crash.

It happened about 9p Wednesday in Oconee County, Georgia on Georgia SR15, just outside of Watkinsville.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports Oconee County, Georgia Sheriff Scott Berry said two mid-sized sedans, one driving northbound and the other southbound, collided when one of the vehicles crossed the center line.

Berry says the five students were all in one of the cars.

The driver of the other car was taken to a hospital, but the condition of that person wasn’t available.

The fifth surviving student is listed in critical condition at Athens Regional Medical Center.

The names of the students have not yet been released.

Berry wrote on the Oconee County Sheriff’s Facebook site early Thursday that the women killed were all positively identified but he was withholding the names, “due to extended family notifications and the fact that families have to travel a significant distance to arrive in town.”

In a prepared statement, UGA president Jere Morehead wrote, “We are deeply saddened to learn of the heartbreaking and tragic loss of four students and critical injuries to another student in a terrible car accident last night outside of Athens. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of our students who were victims. We ask that you keep these students and their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”
