Franklin County Pair Found Guilty in North Georgia Credit Union Robbery

Two Franklin County men, charged in the 2011 armed robbery of the Lavonia Branch of North Georgia Credit Union, have been found guilty in U.S. District Court in Athens.

On Monday, a jury handed down guilty verdicts for 46-year old Orlando Brock of Lavonia and 43-year old Walter Butler, Jr. of Bowersville.

Brock and Butler were both initially charged with felony Armed Bank Robbery and one count of Brandishing a Firearm During a Crime of Violence.

The jury Monday found Butler not guilty of armed bank robbery, but did find him guilty of the lesser offense of aiding and abetting a bank robbery.  Brock was found guilty of armed bank robbery as well as aiding and abetting the brandishing of a firearm during an armed bank robbery.  No word on when they will be sentenced.

The robbery took place on the afternoon September 22, 2011.   Butler was arrested by the Georgia State Patrol shortly after a high-speed chase.

After a lengthy investigation involving the Lavonia Police and the FBI, two more suspects in the case were arrested months later.

They are identified as 40-year old Juan Vladimer Camp, of Gainesville, and Allen Colbert, age and address unknown.  Camp was picked up at a construction job site in Gwinnett County months later.  Colbert was arrested in December 2012.

Carlisle said both Camp and Colbert have entered pleas and have been cooperating with authorities.  He said based on information from Camp and Colbert, the gun used in the armed robbery was recovered last summer near the bank.

Brock was the last suspect to be arrested in that case.  His arrest came in October 2013 at the Fed Ex office in Athens where he worked as a supervisor.
