GDOT Begins Road Repairs From Winter Storms

Winter may be over, but the clean up from the winter storms is not.

This week, crews with the Georgia Dept of Transportation began working in some Northeast Georgia counties to remove tree debris from roadsides left from the winter ice and snow.

But they are also beginning the tedious task of replacing thousands of raised pavement markers that were scraped off state routes by snowplows, according to GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope.

“When the snow plows plow state routes, the blade from the plow scrapes the surface of the pavement and in so doing removes the raised reflective lane markers,” Pope said.

Pope said crews began working in Hall County and will be gradually working their way up to our area later this summer.

She says, however, if you do come across those crews, please slow down and be patient.

“It is a rolling lane closure,” she said. “There’s a person sitting on a little seat about eight inches above the roadway swung out over the center lane of traffic. He shoots epoxy out and puts the marker on top every few feet. So if you come across one of those, please just be patient and use caution.”

Pope said replacing the thousands of raised pavement markers in Northeast Georgia will take several months.
