GDOT Keeps Lanes Open Over Labor Day Weekend

This weekend is the Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end to summer and that means more motorists on the roads.

That’s why the Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures on Interstate highways and heavily traveled state routes.

GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope says the work will stop on Friday.

There will be no construction-related lane closures between 5a Friday and Tuesday at 5a,” Pope said. “Now there could still be emergency lane closures if there’s an accident or some other problem with the roadway, but there will not be any construction-related lane closures.”

But Pope said that doesn’t mean motorists will not encounter construction areas.

Pope said it’s important drivers stay alert and pay attention to any sudden changes in the road.

Just because there are not lane closures, does not mean the work zone is perfect. These work zones will still be there so we need you to slow down as you approach them and use caution as you drive through them.”

GDOT reminds travelers that crews may still be working in proximity to highways and state routes; and safety concerns may require some long-term lane closures to remain in place.

Pope notes anyone stopped by police or the State Patrol for a traffic violation in a work zone also faces double trouble.

All fines are doubled in a work zone, even when it’s not active,” Pope said. “So for your safety and for your budget it’s wise to slow down in a work zone when you come to it.”
