GDOT Suspending Construction Over Holiday Weekend

Some good news for those who will be traveling to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving
this week. The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane
closures on Interstates and major state routes, according to G-OOT spokesperson Teri
Pope.

“Thanksgiving is a very high volume day for traffic across Georgia. Typically, we have about 3,000 accidents during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and on average more than a dozen people die in traffic crashes on Georgia’s roads. More than 1,000 are typically injured. What Georgia DOT is trying to do is to remove construction projects from the equation.”
Road work will stop beginning at 5 a.m., Wednesday, November 26, and extending
until 10 p.m., Sunday, November 30.
Pope said however, crews may still be working and heavy equipment may remain
staged in close proximity to highways.
She said that includes in our area.“We do have some major construction projects going on in Northeast Georgia: State Route 17 in Stephens County and into Franklin County is under construction. There will not be lane closures, but you will still see equipment and barrels along the roadway. So, please note that it’s not completely going away, but you won’t have lane closures over the holiday weekend.”

Pope said it’s good idea to access the G-OOT 511 number to get real time traffic info
before you set out on the road.
“You can also use our 511 calling system to get real time traffic information , in case there is a crash or problem that does interrupt your travel over the holiday weekend.”
Additionally, 511 is available online.
