Georgia Law Enforcement Joins With South Carolina for a Safe Holiday

The Governors office of Highway Safety has launched their annual Click or Ticket safe driving campaign for the Memorial Day weekend.

The official start of the holiday weekend begins tonight at 6p and ends Monday night at midnight.

Local and State law enforcement will be out in force to catch impaired drivers and those driving distracted or without seatbelts.

Speaking Wednesday at a press conference at the Big Oaks Recreation Center, GOHS Director Harris Blackwood said safety on the roads is vital for a safe holiday weekend.

“We will be working on both sides of this lake to hold down the number of fatalities on roads, not only this weekend but every day during the summer season,” Blackwood said.

And across the water in South Carolina, troopers will also be watching for those driving under the influence.

Major Michael Warren of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said all the agencies are working together to keep everyone safe this weekend and all summer long.

“We are partnering with Georgia DNR and the Georgia State Patrol. We know that people have to travel to get to our beautiful lakes and parks. We know they will bringing alcohol with them. Our goal is to get them here safely and to get them back safely,” he said.

Counting local law enforcement personnel as well as state patrol, DNR and Corps of Engineers, over one thousand officers will be on the roads across the states of Georgia and South Carolina.
