Hart County Fire Department to Add New Fire Truck

Hart County commissioners have tentatively approved the purchase of another fire truck for one of their local fire stations.

At their called meeting Tuesday evening, the board heard from Rock Springs Fire Chief Ryan Ray about a newer pre-owned mini pumper truck they are looking to buy.

Ray said they need a smaller fire engine to access the remote parts of their area.

“In the district of Rock Springs, the functionality of that truck is outstanding,” he told the Commission. “There are driveways where you can’t get a UPS or Fed-Ex truck down much less a fire engine. This truck would serve as a smaller engine. We could operate and work a house fire off of this truck.”

The truck has just over 14,000 miles on it and cost is $4,800.

County administrator Jon Caime noted money to buy another fire truck was already allocated in the fire department’s 2016 budget.

The truck being sold by the Pooler, GA fire department and Ray said they are bringing it up to Hart County Thursday for firefighters to look at and to run a pump test.

But Commissioner RC Oglesby suggested the truck go straight to the county maintenance department.

“When they get here with the truck it needs to go straight to the maintenance shop,” he said. “They need to inspect it first. We don’t want anyone to see it until we have it inspected and the maintenance shop signs off on it.”

After more discussion, the board gave tentative approval for the purchase pending the outcome of the pump test and the maintenance shop inspection.
