Last year, the Humane Society discovered it had used up all of its $80,000 spay-neuter fund over the past several years, providing free or low-cost spay/neuters to pets of low-income households in Hart County.

The problem was exacerbated when a couple of grant funds had also run out.

On Wednesday, Hart County Humane Society President Donna Madkiff said the group made over $2,000 last weekend and she is grateful for the community’s show of support.

“The event was a huge success raising $2,090.00!” Madkiff said. “We want to especially thank Tammy Mobley for generously donating the use of her building. Having a site for drop off and organizing of donated items was a valuable contribution. Also as valuable are the volunteers, thank you for making this event a success.”

All this year, the group has been concentrating on fund raising so they can continue to help pet owners as well as pay for veterinary services for some of the animals they take in for adoption.

Madkiff says many of the dogs and cats they take in from the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter are the ones nobody else wants and usually come with health issues.

“While Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter has worked hard to be rescue friendly and has formed great relationships, there are always animals not rescued,” she said. “Some of those not rescued are amazing animals, not fancy but loving and deserving of a family. These are the dogs and cats we are called to rescue. Sadly these are the ones that may be physically or emotional in need of extra care. With the support of caring people we can save the ones left behind.”

Madkiff said they are always looking for volunteers and if you missed the yard sale last Saturday you can still donate and help the animals.
