Hart County Looks Into Volunteer Maintenance Plan at LongPoint Park

Hart County is looking at setting up an area for volunteers at Longpoint Park as a way to have some oversight and maintenance during peak tourist months.

At their meeting Tuesday, Commission Frankie Teasley pointed out since the County took over the park from the U.S.

Army Corps of Engineers, there’s been no plan put in place for maintenance.

“I know we will be opening LongPoint back up in the middle of March,” Teasley said. “I know the parks they have hosts that maintain the parks. Maybe we could come up with some campsites down there and get people to volunteer to camp there where we could get people to keep some of these areas clean.”

In January 2014, the board agreed to take over both LongPoint Park and Milltown Campgrounds from the Corps.  In July, however, Commissioner Joey Dorsey noted there was a bad problem with trash at the park after a summer music concert.  Teasley noted volunteers often host other campgrounds and parks in an effort to keep them clean and safe.

County administrator Jon Caime said it was good idea for LongPoint.

“That’s a great idea,” Caime said. “Milltown is a campground and it’s set up for that. I’m assuming we have either sewer or septic set up at LongPoint. So we should be able to set up a volunteer station. Just having that presence would be beneficial, absolutely.”

Commissioner Joey Dorsey however, questioned whether the Corps would allow a volunteer maintenance person to camp at LongPoint.

The board took no vote but Caime said he would research the matter.
