The Hartwell City Council has signed off on a plan to sell the Cateechee Golf Club.

In a called meeting Friday, the city council met to go over the terms of that sale, according to City Manager David Aldrich.  Aldrich said research on whether to sell the land has been going on for some time.

“There’s been discussions going on for months and months and everyone has been doing their due diligence during that time, but the mayor and council didn’t come to a decision to approve it until Friday,” Aldrich said.

Aldrich said the attorneys for the city and Cateechee’s owners are now working on the final paperwork.

The golf club, golf course itself and its buildings are owned by a company called Diversified Golf, Inc.  However, the city owns the land the course sits on.  Aldrich said the Company is trying to sell the golf club to a new developer.

“There is a developer looking to go in there and purchase that and make improvements. So, we think it will be good for all parties,” he said.

Aldrich said however, in order for Diversified to sell the golf club, they had to get approval from the Hartwell City Council.

“The City owns the dirt. Diversified owns the improvements. So, Diversified owns the golf course and buildings it and all. But the dirt, the land that it’s on was with a 50-year lease from the City,” Aldrich said.

Aldrich did not say who was attempting to buy Cateechee.
