This year’s Dam Dog Walk, sponsored by the Hart County Humane Society was a big success, but the fundraising effort to replenish the group’s spay/neuter fund still has a ways to go.

Humane Society President Donna Madkiff said despite the rescheduled rain date, lots of dog lovers came out on April 26th to support their efforts.

“We had a good turn out and people seemed to have had a good time,” Madkiff said. “We raised a little bit of money to help our sick and injured animals and we’re looking forward to next year already.”

Madkiff said they are always looking for new ideas to make the Dam Dog Walk better every year.

The group raised about $500, which Madkiff said will go to treat sick or injured animals the shelter takes in.

However, the Hart County Humane Society has run out of funds over the past year to supply free spay/neuters to low-income pet owners – a main focus of the group.

Madkiff said that has resulted in having to cut back on some of their rescue efforts to focus more on fundraising.

“Because we’re working so much on fundraising, it means we’re not able to do as much rescuing,” she said. “We’re working to replenish our low-cost spay/neuter program. That’s our main mission. It’s always been free to low-income households in Hart County, but now it’s $50. I would like to see it get at least down to $25.”

Madkiff said the next fund raiser will be a huge yard sale planned for the same weekend as the Cars & Guitars Under the Stars event.
