Lavonia City Council, Mayor to Get Update on Projects Tonight

Lavonia City Commissioners are expected to get updates on various projects when they meet for their regular monthly meeting tonight.

The City has been working on several projects, including a project to place a memorial bench at the location of the old Spring St. Elementary School.

Back in January, Barbara Clark and Jamie Richards came before the council to request permission to put the bench on that spot near the Spring St. Gymnasium.

Richards said a new generation of young people are moving into Springview Heights who need to know and understand the community’s history.

“We are requesting the portion where the school was occupied be designated as a historical landmark because it was the last colored school in the Lavonia area,” Richards told the council. ” We believe that it is important that we do not forget our history and we make sure that present and future generations be informed and proud of our educational and community background.”

The Spring St. Colored School as it was originally called, opened in 1955 in the Springview Heights community.

Its name was later changed to Spring St. Elementary School.

The school building was eventually torn down in the 1970′s, but the gymnasium still stands and is used as a local community center.

In other business, tonight the council and mayor will also hear a the 2014 Audit report from the CPA firm of Rushton & Co. as well as a proclamation from Lavonia Downtown Development Authority Director Marie Morse on Historic Preservaton Month.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 5:30p at Lavonia City Hall.
