Lavonia Police to Offer Free Firearm Training Class

If you are licensed gun owner and especially if you are a novice gun owner, you might want to take advantage of an upcoming free seminar on the proper handling and use of a firearm.

Sponsored by the Lavonia Police Department, the two-day seminar is coming up next month, according to Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle.

“The Lavonia Police Department is partnering with the Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office to present a citizens’ firearms class here at the Lavonia Police Department,” Carlisle said. “The first class will take place the evening of Friday, March 18th and the morning of Saturday, March 19th.”

Carlisle said the seminar and training will cover a number of topics on the proper use of a firearm in Georgia, including current state gun laws.

“The Friday evening course will be classroom instruction presented by Lavonia Police officers, District Attorney Parks White, and Chief Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Fogus,” Carlisle explained. “The class will go over laws regarding the possession of firearms and other laws as they pertain to firearm possession and use.”

Then on Saturday, March 19th, Carlisle said gun owners will get some actual live training at a firing range.

Carlisle said the seminar and firearm training is the result of numerous requests from local citizens.

“We had requests from several citizens within the City of Lavonia who have and interest in the proper way to carry firearms and obtaining a firearms permit. So, we just feel like it’s a good idea to provide this service.”

For this first two-day firearm training seminar, Carlisle said they are accepting 32 participants.

However, if more people call after this class is filled, another class will be scheduled in the coming months.

Carlisle says in this day and age, it’s important for gun owners to be well versed in the law and in the proper use of their firearm.

“A lot of people just go out and get their carry permit, but have never had any instruction on how to handle and carry a gun. However, it’s a good idea to know what you’re doing and have some officers around who have been involved in carrying firearms for a number of years. We have some great firearm instructors here,’ Carlisle concluded.

Again, the firearm training seminar is coming up March 18th and 19th in Lavonia.
