Lavonia’s Night Out Against Crime is a Go Tonight – Rain or Shine

Rain is not putting a damper on tonight’s National Night Out Against Crime in Lavonia.

This year’s event takes place this evening at the Gazebo on Main St. downtown from 5p – 8p.  However, if it rains, the event will be moved to the Lavonia Elementary School gym.

Lavonia Night Out is based on the National Night Out Against Crime, a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Hall Watch.

This is the 14th year Lavonia Police have offered the free evening block party, which is designed to build bridges between law enforcement and the community.

Carlisle said Lavonia Night Out gives people in the community a chance to get to know his officers as people.

“Night Out Against Crime is our way of showing our appreciation to the community because there is no way we could do what we do without the help and cooperation of the community,” he said. “This is our small way of saying thank you with our little get together.”

As in past years, Carlisle said they have lots of fun things planned for the kids as well as good food and entertainment.

“This year will be much like years in the past with free food, entertainment and other things for all ages. We just hope everyone comes out again this year so we can fellowship together and show our appreciation,” Carlisle said.

Music will be provided by Backwoods Country.

According to Carlisle, the annual block party has been successful in helping people in Lavonia learn to trust his officers.

Carlisle said his department spends a lot of time doing undercover work and make a good many arrests based on the tips and cooperation they receive from citizens.

Again, this year’s Lavonia Night Out Against Crime takes place this evening from 5p – 8p at the Gazebo in downtown Lavonia.  If it rains, the event will be moved to the Lavonia Elementary School gym.  It is free and open to the public.
