Motorists Asked to Avoid North Georgia Mountains Today

It is still snowing in the Gaps of Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White Counties this morning and crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation continue to battle icy road conditions.

GDOT officials are asking people to avoid driving until snow ends and the threat of black ice is over today in the higher elevations of the Mountain Counties.

“Crews are plowing snow and spreading materials to provide additional traction and break up the icing at these locations in Union County,” said GDOT spokesperson Teri Pope.  The following routes have reported black ice:

  • State Route 11/US 129/US 19 over Blood Mountain in Union and Lumpkin Counties.
  • SR 180 west towards Suches
  • SR 11/US129 north towards North Carolina

“Today’s winter weather is not over in Northeast Georgia. Union County is our focus right now. Please help us by staying off the roads there if you can. We will continue to monitor conditions in the Gaps of Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White Counties and work as long as needed today,” explained Brent Cook, Georgia DOT District Engineer serving Northeast Georgia.
