Motorists using SR17 to get to and from Franklin County to Stephens County today can expect to encounter some delays

Georgia DOT crews will close the intersection of Anderson Thomas Road and SR17 in Martin today.

That intersection will remain closed for the next 30 days, according to G-DOT spokesperson Teri Pope.

“The detour will actually close about 1000 feet of Anderson Thomas road as it meets with State Route 17. It’s going to change the grade of Anderson Thomas to meet the new grade of the widened state route 17. So not the whole road will be closed just where it approaches state route 17.”

Pope said crews will be working to reset Anderson Thomas Road to match the grade of the new, wider SR17 and while work is going on, traffic will be detoured.

The signed detour will route traffic from Anderson Thomas Road to Martin Drive to Hurricane Grove Road to Wedd Road and back to Anderson Thomas Road.

If weather permits, Anderson Thomas Road will reopen by June 19.

But Pope said motorists can expect other closings as the work on SR17 moves forward.

“Basically all of the roads that intersect with the new road, the grade will have to be changed because we are changing the grade of 17 itself. So it will happen down the road as we go and if it hasn’t gotten to your road yet, don’t worry, it will.”

The 6.28 mile long widening of SR 17 from Scott Road to the Stephens Franklin County line has a contract completion date of May 31, 2016. C.W. Matthews Contracting is building this project at a cost of $46.2 million.
