A murder suspect from New Orleans is behind bars in Banks County,.

According to the Banks County Sheriff’s office, 27-year old Travis Cochran of Louisiana was captured Thursday during a joint interstate criminal enforcement operation between Banks County and Lowndes County deputies.

Cochran has been on the run from New Orleans authorities since 2013.  Cochran was the passenger in a 2014 Toyota Highlander that was stopped Thursday on I-85 north at exit 149.

During the traffic stop, Cochran gave a false name and birth date several times to deputies.  One name and date of birth that Cochran gave matched with a subject who had an outstanding DeKalb County warrant.  Cochran was arrested for that warrant and taken to Banks County Law Enforcement Center.

When his fingerprints were scanned through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), officers discovered Cochran’s real identity.

The system also alerted that Cochran had an outstanding warrant from the Gwinnett County Police Department for possession of marijuana in addition to the outstanding New Orleans Police Department warrant for murder.

Cochran remains in the Banks County Detention Center.
