Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter Offering Cats, Kittens for $9 Adoption Fee

9 Kitten2Cats and kittens are filling the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter to overflowingand now the shelter is offering a special adoption deal to help those kitties find new homes.

This time of year is commonly referred to as “Kitten Season,” the time when mama cats are having their litters and despite efforts to educate people on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets, there is still a bad pet overpopulation problem in our area.

Now the shelter in Lavonia, which serves two counties and six municipalities is over run with kittens and cats, according to shelter director Sheri Lockhart.

“The problem we’re running into is people are not spaying or neutering their pets, or they’re taking in strays and they’re reproducing over and over again,” Lockhart said. “As of today, we have taken in over 528 cats and kittens since January, which is very sad.”9 Kitten3

Lockhart said the shelter is currently working with Hart County authorities to remove over 60 cats from a home.

“The lady started out with two cats two years ago,” Lockhart said.

More than half of those kittens and cats h ave had to be put to sleep to make room for the continued influx of new litters and unwanted adult cats.

“A lot of them are really, really nice, healthy cats and kittens,” she said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have the room to house all of the cats and kittens that come into our shelter. I would say this month alone we’ve probably euthanized about half of the cats and kittens that have come in.”

Many of those cats and kittens were sick, Lockhart said.

9 kitten1Lockhart said the shelter staff has been working with local vets to spay and neuter as many of the adoptable cats and kittens as possible, which has made it possible to greatly reduce their adoption fees.

“We have decided to run a special through the remaining month of July to offer them for adoption at just $9,” Lockhart said. “Any cat that has been previously spayed or neutered will be offered for just $9 and that includes their rabies shot. We have all sizes and colors.”

All of those cats and kittens have already been spayed or neutered and have had their first distemper shots and if old enough, a rabies vaccine.   The Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter is located on Bear Creek Road in Lavonia off SR17.   They’re open Tuesday – Saturday from 11a to 4p.
