Part of New Royston Elementary Traffic Plan on Hold

Royston Elementary School has postponed its restructuring of its traffic plan for parents who pick up and drop off their students.

Earlier this month, the Royston City Council signed off on a new plan that turns a three-way intersection into a four-way stop.

Royston Police Chief Donnie Boleman told the Roysto City Council the new plan would also change the drop off and pick up zones around Royston Elementary in accordance with new state regulations from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

“We’re trying to make a safer area,” Boleman said. “There won’t be anymore megaphones with hollering for kids down the breezeway. They’ll all be inside in a safe area.”

That area is inside the school gym, where kids will be grouped to wait for their parents.  But last week at a called meeting, the city council heard from Chief Boleman who said that part of the plan has been delayed.

“Their plan is to keep the kids in a gym and as parents come up in a line, they will call the kids name and that will keep the process more orderly,” said Royston mayor David Jordan. “But now they want to put up an awning on that side of the building so if it’s raining, the kids don’t get soaked.  So that’s why the delay. They want to put up that awning.”

Jordan said however, the new four-way stop at the Cherry St. intersection will stay in place.
