SC Man Dies After Being Hit by Train

An 88 year-old Westminster man died Thursday morning (July 23rd) in the emergency department at Oconee Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained after being struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train.
. This incident occurred at approximately 8:30 am at the North Bibb Street grade crossing in Westminster.
According to the engineer and conductor of the train, the victim, Derrick E. Holden of 202 N. Bibb Street, Westminster. was bent over trying to get his pet dog off of the track.
The investigation indicates the victim came in contact with the side of the lead engine; the train was northbound toward Greenville at the time of the incident; the train was traveling at approximately 45 mph; the victim was thrown 38 feet toward East North Avenue.
He sustained cardiac arrest at the scene. First responders and EMS provided basic and advanced life support with transport to the emergency department. Holden was pronounced dead at 9:17 am.
