WHERE: Ed Bryant Stadium, Carnesville
HART COUNTY: (0-0, Region 8S-AA) The Bulldogs went 8-3 in 2009, reaching the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.
FRANKLIN COUNTY: (0-0, Region 8A-AAA) The Lions went 5-6 in 2009, reaching the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.
LAST MEETING: Hart County won 16-6 on Oct. 30, 2009. The Bulldogs lead the series 34-14.
NOTABLE: Franklin County will be eager to see if anyone can step up and fill the shoes of its two most explosive players in 2009, as they open up against a traditional rival. Quarterback Deshawn Merritt (600 yards rushing, 1,300 passing in 2009) and brother and wide receiver DaQuan Merritt (11 TDs) graduated after last season, and now the Lions hope that junior Kevin Harris can step in and take up the slack at quarterback. Andrew Heaton will lead a capable group at running back, and it will be interesting to see how the Lions’ spread attack develops an identity over the coming weeks. Franklin County does have a core of offensive linemen to lean on, including B.J. McCauley, Ben Parten and Damien Riden. Hart County enters the game as one of the favorites to claim Region 8-AA after dropping down in size from last season. This should be an explosive start to the season for both teams.
