Spring Rabies Clinic Best Yet Says NEGAS Shelter Director

Last weekend’s rabies clinic at the Northeast Georgia Animal Shelter broke records for the number of animals vaccinated.

That’s according to Shelter Director Sheri Lockhart who said Thursday, people came from Franklin and surrounding counties to make sure their pets were protected from the deadly disease.

“We had a wonderful, wonderful, spring rabies clinic this year,” said Lockhart. “It was the best one we ever had. We gave 282 rabies vaccines and 97 canine distemper parvo vaccines and 33 feline distemper vaccines. It’s exciting that we’re doing that many vaccines for the public and that they’re willing to come out and get their animals vaccinated against rabies and other diseases.”
Lockhart said pet owners came not only from Franklin County, but also Hart, Elbert, Stephens, and Banks counties for the shots, which were given for $5 each for a one year vaccine, $10 for a three-year, and $7 for the canine and feline distemper shots.

This was the first of two annual rabies vaccines the shelter sponsors.   The next one will be in the fall.

“We haven’t set our date for our fall rabies clinic yet, but we will be hosting another one in the fall,” Lockhart said. “If you pet is due for its vaccines in the fall, we invite you to come out at that time and get them vaccinated. It will be the same prices as the spring clinic.”

And if you missed this rabies clinic and still need to get your animal vaccinated, the Franklin County Health Department will be sponsoring another rabies clinic at various locations next month.  The price for a one-year rabies vaccine will also be $5.
