Franklin County Rec Department Junior Boys Little League warms up Tuesday evening at the Lavonia ball fields.

Franklin County citizens are asked to tie a green ribbon or bow on their mailboxes or tree to show support for the Franklin County Rec Department’s Jr. Little League Boys baseball team as they make their way to the regional play-offs this weekend.

The team recently became the State Little League Champions in Georgia – the first time the Franklin County Boys Baseball team has taken the state title.

The team was at the Lavonia ball fields Tuesday for some practice before heading off to Taylors, SC.  Rob Hill is the manager of the Junior Little League Boys team.  Hill credits the team’s strong work ethic and faith for their success on the diamond so far.

“Our work ethic has been great from day one,” Hill said. “This team has also given God all the glory from day one. Every hit, every run, they just take time to thank Him and I really feel like that’s made the difference in this team.”

Hill said all of the boys, who are ages 13 – 14, have shown tremendous courage and talent on the field.Little league1

Michael Bond is the team coach. Bond said the team is actually made up of members of different Rec league teams.
But despite that, he said all of the members are united towards one goal.

“There is a lot of talent, but they’ve all come together as one team,” he said. “In the short period of time that we’ve had, they’ve all come together and made one great team. They’ve just shown excellent sportsmanship.”

Hill said the team only had about three weeks to practice and prepare for this season’s playoffs.

“We’ve had a combination of about three weeks to get ready,” Hill said. “Not a whole lot of time, but the guys have really come together and played well.”

“And most of these kids have been playing together since they were four or five years old up here with the Rec department,” Bond said. “So we’ve had about eight or nine years working with these kids. They’re not kids anymore, they’re young men.”

On Thursday, the team will be in Taylors, SC for a special recognition banquet.  Then on Friday, regional play begins at noon in Taylors.  The team will play three games this weekend.  All three games, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will be at noon.

If they win the region, the team will go on to the National Little League World Series in Michigan.
