Toccoa to Forward Fund Sidewalk Project

Toccoa City Commissioners will likely forward fund a plan to build a sidewalk from Rose Lane and Fernside Drive down SR17 to the Wal-mart at the 17 ByPass.

At last Monday’s Toccoa City Commission meeting, representatives of KCI Engineering gave Commissioners a progress update on the sidewalk plan.

The City of Toccoa has already received a permit from the Georgia Department of Transportation or GDOT for the project.

Commissioners have been debating whether to do the entire project all at once or in phases over a couple of years.

According to Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse, the city has the funding to complete the first stage of the project that would take the sidewalk to the area of what is known as “the Wigwam”.

At their meeting last week, engineers said doing the project all at once would save the City about 10% of the $300,000 price tag in just materials alone.

KCI Engineers caution that $300,000 is only an estimate and issues like drainage and other problems may come up during construction that would add to that number.

After some discussion, Commissioners agreed to pursue forward funding the sidewalk project.
However, no timeline for the project was discussed.
