Two Local High School Students Win Law Day Essay Contest

Two local high school students are the winners of this year’s Law Day Essay Contest.

The contest is sponsored each year by Madison County attorney and Juvenile Court Judge Warren Caswell.

This is the tenth annual Law Day Essay Contest and according to Caswell, it is designed to encourage young people to think about the role of law in society and how law affects their everyday lives.

Caswell said he runs the contest in conjunction with National Law Day.

“For National Law Day, various bar associations run different events,” he said. “For the past ten years I’ve always run an essay contest for local high school students.  It isn’t a lot of money, but we try to do something to help students further their education.”

This year’s winners are Andrew S. Zemaitis, of Hart County who won first place, and Hanna Smith of Franklin County who took second.

Zemaitis is a sophomore at Hart County High School.  He will receive a $500 scholarship.

Smith is a senior at Franklin County High School and will receive a $200 scholarship.

“The contest received several high-quality entries this year,” Caswell said. “All of the entrants are to be congratulated on their efforts.”

Law Day was first proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 and is a day of national dedication to the principle of government under law.
