Winter Weather Advisory in Effect Until Noon

snow1The winter storm that pushed through Northeast and much of Georgia on Tuesday left us with icy conditions on the roads  Tuesday afternoon and overnight, which sparked numerous accidents in Franklin, Hart, and Stephens counties.

And with temperatures dipping down into the 20’s in most areas last night, that meant wet roads turned to icy roads overnight creating hazardous conditions this morning.

As a result, a winter weather advisory remains in effect for Franklin, Hart, and Stephens counties and most of our area today until noon.

“It goes through noon today for the entire area,” said John Tomko meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg this morning. “That is for black ice on the roads for counties on the Upper Savannah River.  Atlanta, I believe still  has a winter storm warning out, which is also for black ice, but they’re having major problems down in Atlanta.”

The good news in all of this however, according to Tomko is that conditions should begin to improve as the day wears on and the sun comes out.

“We’re going to warm up but not very much,” he said. “We’re going to get to just above freezing. That should be enough to help out with the roads. The mountains may not get above freezing though. We’re hoping that with the slightly warming temperatures and with the sun coming out,  that that will help get some of this black ice out of here.”

And more good news…by the weekend temperatures should be back to normal for this time of year – in the 50’s and even 60’s.
